USDA mandates dairy content minimum in RUF: 50% in RUTF, world premiere minimum 33% content for ready-to-use supplementary food
The USDA Farm Service Agency published its new commodity requirements for ready-to-use nutritional foods for use in international food assistance. In the new requirements, therapeutic foods (RUTF) must contain 50% dairy protein and in supplementary foods (RUSF), 33% of the protein must derive from dairy skim milk. Previously, the RUSF dairy requirement was only a “recommendation” by WHO/FAO. Translated into ingredient needs, this is equivalent to 20-25% of total formulation provided by SMP for RUTF, 10-12% SMP (or other dairy protein source) by weight for RUSF.
